Some two thousand years ago if you visited a Greek physician's home, there is a high likelihood that your prescription was to boil some Olea europaea leaves in water and drink the mixture daily.
Today few people are still drinking olive leaf tea, and taking olive leaf extract. If you ask them why, they will tell you with determined faces that it keeps them healthy and that it has kept their families in good health for generations.
It is only in recent years that scientific discoveries have found that these many generations of people over a score of centuries have concrete evidence to back up their claims of better health. The active ingredients in the Olea europaea's foliage are called polyphenolic antioxidants and the reputation is growing. The olive is praised throughout the Christian Bible from Noah’s Ark onwards. Some even refer to the Olea europaea as the "Tree of Life" spoken of in the last book of the Bible - Revelation 22:2."....and the leaves of the tree shall be for the healing of the nations."
The earliest known usage of Olea europaea leaves for medicinal purposes was by the Ancient Egyptians over four thousand years ago - they even used it to help preserve their mummies for the afterlife! Latterly, a leading American pharmaceutical company, Upjohn, investigated, and proved the potency of some of the active compounds to fight a wide range of illnesses.
Researchers at the University of Milan concluded that Oleuropein (one of the main polyphenolic antioxidants) inhibited the oxidation of low density lipoproteins(LDL) which is the bad cholesterol in heart disease. Across the globe, people are choosing to reduce their reliance on modern, synthetic drugs as they turn back to the natural remedies, which have served our ancestors so well.
From laboratories as widespread as Hungary, Spain, Tunisia, Belgium, Italy and the United States of America, scientists have confirmed the incredible healing nature of the Olea europaea leaf.
The medicinal use of the leaf can be traced back to the early 1800s, when it was used as a treatment for malaria. In 1970, the plant's active ingredient was shown to be effective against herpes. A more recent study showed that subjects experienced less pain and less severe lesions while taking the tincture. Other benefits included being able to reintroduce food rich in arginine, such as pork, corn and onions, which would otherwise bring on an attack. The overall effect on the body's antibody response to the virus remained mostly unchanged, except in one patient who showed a 22.8 per cent decrease in antibody activity.

Olive leaf extract is bursting with antioxidants!

Plant extracts are now emerging as weapon against metabolic syndrome. Indeed a caffeine supplier adds olive powder to its products!
An olive leaf extract that has more potent antioxidant activity than many green tea or grapeseed supplements, contains at least 12 of the antioxidant polyphenols found in olive leaf thanks to the proprietary processing method developed by privately owned family firm Olive Leaf Australia.

But when the first results came back the researchers thought they had made a mistake, and went back to do further tests.

A team, led by Dr Lesley Stevenson at the Natural Products Pharmacology Unit at Southern Cross University, found that the olive leaf extract had an ORAC value of 10,465 mmol TE/g compared to 5,937 mmol for a green tea extract made by an internationally recognized plant extract firm and sold on the Australian market.

The gap was even wider for grapeseed supplements and vitamin C.

While olive oil has long been thought to offer health benefits, particularly for the heart, making supplements from the olive leaf is a relatively new concept.

There is however an increasing number of companies offering such a product, in response to a study in 1999 demonstrating greater antioxidant activity than vitamins C and E.

Most herbal extracts are made from the dried leaf, but if you dry the leaf this reduces a lot of the compounds and shipping has a further damaging effect. We harvest at sunrise and within two hours are doing the processing.

Tests using HPLC technology have found that the company's EvirOlea brand product, extracted using a natural, water-based process, is rich in many of the olive leaf compounds initially present when the leaf is still on the tree.

Olive leaf extracts are often measured by their oleuropein content but Evirolea and their scientific colleagues think there is a synergy with the other polyphenols.

This potent antioxidant effect could offer major health benefits. The company has commissioned a bioassay in the coming months to test the extract for its anti-inflammatory activity, as well as impact on cancer cells.

The lab tests will also check for anti-bacterial and anti-microbial activity.

At the same time, a human trial, to be carried out by the University of Queensland and the Wesley medical institute, will investigate the impact of the antioxidants on cholesterol reduction as well as their capacity to lower blood pressure by relaxing the arteries.

Yet it appears that many Australian consumers have already decided on the health benefits offered by olive leaf.

Most customers are buying it for colds and flu, and others are buying it for particular conditions like arthritis. We are not medical practioners and do not make any claims as to the health properties of olive leaf extract..
